The Honest Truth about the PBRA? Dispell or confirm the Accusations

2009 August 15
by The Refinishing Guru

We started the professional bathtub refinishers association with a quest for knowledge. We never dreamed we would be copied or made a target of ones fixation. I also never dreamed we would be used as a template. But I guess we should consider it an honor and complimnet that people mimic many of our techniques and try and build the same kind of platform. I am proud to say at least ours was built out of the desire to  help versus hate and jelousy. This may explain why we have the success of paid members. It was all new to the founders and we never thought in the beginning it would be where it is at today nor did we expect the negative feed back from people trying to do what we do.

On the Dawn of our next giant step we do not want to make the same mistakes from the past or to impede growth by having misunderstandings what we are about. when people write negative things about us with no basis in fact we must counter these vile actions with truth.

We also want the refinishers in the world to know the truth about our joint mission. The PBRA is a team of independent refinishers who gather together under a cyber roof to help each other and promote the best products and refinishing techniques. Its not about one its about us all being the best we can be.

The PBRA has been accused by other firms as being a monopoly. We have been frowned upon because we have an experience level requirement and really bashed by certain similar organizations because we have a membership fee. My own experience with associations and fees that are close to home is apartment associations, builders associations, and realtor associations, and so on have an annual fee to be a member. Why should we be any different? Do you guys or gals regret contributing to the PBRA? Would you rather the PBRA fund its endeavors by Google Pay Per Click ads flashing your competition on our site?

I think that’s a good thing but I want to hear the truth from you. To me its a great step forward of setting a standard on a national level without being a franchise but its your opinion and your message I want you to deliver to the general public and other refinishers.

Some of the same people are saying we force people to use our products and suggested coatings. We do like our products but I don’t ever recall forcing or locking anyone out for using their system of choice. If we encourage a product its because we simply are sharing information and wish you to avoid problems. So in your own words please convey to the general public the answer to that. Be honest I want to know too.

The same people say we charge for Leads? What’s that about? Almost every single member gets told leads are like the icing on the cake. We are an infomational data base first. We put up a lead board because we got tired of answering manual emails requesting refinishers. Again let the public know how it really is?

Another thing I need would like answered is do you appreciate the commaradie. I was told by the same people that are fee was way to much to pay for friendship. The apartmetn associations and the like are they paying for freindship or a network of support and standards?

Personaly I think the fee gets paid back often in the first week then for the rest of your career? Currently an average price for our coating is about $50 to $65 dollars for parts A and B. If you began using any one of the many choices we offer you deliver a superior product for 60% less on each purchase. So how does it take to recover your invenstment? I call it an investment because the fee actually makes you money but again we need to let potential refinishers know the truth about the PBRA.

Now tech support I think we support each other, through the board and by phone. 24-7 you can always get an answer. But I would like your opinion on my ability to take calls 7 days a week even at 2 oclock at night? I’ve always done my best to be here you is that not true? A few months back a local refinisher woke me up at 3 am because he was doing a commercial job and ran out of product. I opened my door and took him to my shop to get what he needed. That was Dan Janson. 210-347-5969 of Surface Tech. If you guys lived near me do you feel I would do the same for you?

Last of all I would like you tell the general public your overall experience with the PBRA and the direction you think we are going? Please take the time to either confirm or deny these accusations and set the record strait. Its important to me and I thank you for the time. This way we have the  members honest opinions to keep the record strait.

We have never paid people to post or contribute I hear there are some paying to post or offering gifts. We do it out of mutual support not desperation to build a databaes. We hit 20000 post several times and spend days culling to make room. I think thats odd but if thats what it takes to try and keep up with us then times must be tough.

A Bathtub Refinishers Prayer by Harry Enfer

2009 August 12
by The Refinishing Guru

I need to go on Record here and say that each time I have talked to Harry I often hang up wondering if I am worthy to even be in his presence. He is simply a good man in every way I can describe. Honest as the day is long. Even if he was not a refinisher I would want him as a friend.

He brings quite dignity to the PBRA and we are all better people simply because of his presence. We are also much better refinishers. I hope he does not mind me sharing this with the public but it’s a true reflection of the man who wrote. Read for yourself and know the Caliber of the man we call Harry Enfer. After reading this over almost everyday It dawned on me it deserved it’s own special place for others to enjoy and reflect upon.  I know we at the PBRA are better people if we hold these words true.

A while back I asked Harry if I could re post his Refinishers Prayer and he gave me permission. I did not want it to get lost. It deserves to have a prominent place and easy access for all refinishers to read.
To take each paragraph as he has using our trade as an outline for the real process that perfects not only the craft but the craftsman.
Thank You Harry,

The Refinishers Prayer
My Father, I thank you for another wonderful day and for giving me the opportunity to bring life to another worn out tub. May the process and the quality of my work bring honor and praise to you. Father , I give you the glory for the skills you have bestowed on me. May I use them to the best of my ability and may they be a comfort and witness to the customers you send my way. I wish for them to see you in me! Lord, as I go through the refinishing process I am mindful that your refinishing process on my life is similar to the one I use on old worn out tubs.

To start the process as with a tub, my life needs to be stripped bare so that the etching process can begin. This is probably the most important and painful step because it takes away the gloss and appeal this world has to offer. As you systematically grind all the imperfections, and bring to the surface all the grime, and dirt my life has collected over the years I am aware that everything within me is being prepared for the next step in your restoration process.

Deep cleaning is necessary to remove any residue and impurities left over from the etching process such as habits, walls built and grudges that I’ve held over the years. Attitudes, Anger and Resentment, Greed, and Jealousy, just to name a few. All traces need to be removed for me to fully receive your bonding agent, whom I consider to be your Holy Spirit. (we are all equally guilty) so we hope these words bring peace among the refinishing community as we are all brothers and sisters in Gods eyes.

To me the Holy Spirit is like the bonding agent I use, in that he prepares my dull and worn out surface by his prompting and by that small voice I have so often ignored in the past. He is like a barrier coat that needs to be applied so that the new coating will adhere to the old surface. Father, I pray his voice never goes silent in me and may I be acutely aware of his presence at all times. Good or Bad.

Lord, You and I finally come to the last step in the restoration process. This is where my old surface gets the new look. I am also mindful that as with any new surface, if not cared for, will lose its shine and in time will dull, chips, and peel. I am grateful that your process continuously strips me down, etches me, deep cleans me, bonds and recoats me. As painful as your restoration process is at times and were this not the case I would again become like the old, lifeless worn out rusted tub in very short order.

Lord, as you know, my refinishing process is only temporary, whereas yours will ultimately give me a permanent finish that will last forever when I see you face to face. I do so look forward to that day! Thank you Lord!

Amen

Also your insurance liability is decreased because of the non toxic, non flammability of the coating.

HOW IT WORKS – These are single component coatings, NO CATALYST needed. Your catalyst is in the coating and contains photointiaters that are When the UV light hits the coating, it cures in out in1 to 10 seconds depending on the light and distance from the surface. We carry High Gloss high gloss and satin clear, white, china white, almond, light grey and black for actually our colors are unlimited unlike uther systems. Colors are the same cost. This is not a base coat clear coat system like a car. You simply prime and apply then topcoat. Only half the amount that is normaly used on a bathtub is required. The unused portion can be poured back into the container without waste.

Using your normal equipment its almost like spraying a conventional system. No gravity gun is required. Our formulation is HVLP friendly. In fact we recommend the Fuji Mini Mite available just above cost at the PBRA. We are a FUJI dealer but offer out enormous discounts to our members.

The Coatings are being marketed on their merits. UV COATINGS – do have less odor and the back in service time is literally minutes. Doing two colors on a tub and tile is now done is a day. Our UV lighting system very user freindly. I have seen some of the other heavy ones. The last time I handled lights that big I was in the service manning anti-aircraft guns shinning lights in the sky. Ours is like a blow dryer. Plugs into a 110 No 40 LB transformer We are selling the lights at at $995. Since we do not need transformers our systems are portable and professional looking. We have a great supplier and the supply is unlimited. No waiting list. No requirement to buy solvent coatings for six months because if this is really about health why would we make you buy the other for six months? That’s twisted.
Personal TRAINING is included with our UV package. ONLINE training as well.
We have the ultimate UV package.
COSTS OF COATINGS – $140.00 per gallon and $36.00 per quart, colors are free. NO catalyst and all the other compensating factors bring this down to about $65.00 per gallon compared to VOC COMPLIANT SYSTEMS. IN CLOSEING, THIS IS ALL ABOUT YOUR HEALTH so we will sell to anyone who wants to be in the UV coatings business. Not only is it the safest coating it’s extremely durable and the most porcelain like surface I have ever seen. This is just another tool in the refinishers tool box. Our Choice solvent systems are 82 % solids and meet all VOC compliant requirements. We don’t believe in scare tactics to provide top qualtiy products so call the PBRA or visit us at http://www.refinishersonline.com and join the elite of the elite.

Bathtub Refinishing at the Speed of Light!

The PBRA is just a shade better

The PBRA is just a shade better

The Professional Bathtub Refinishers Association has developed our own line of UV Curable bathtub refinishing Coatings and are currently working with other green technologies for the bathtub refinishing industry.  Actually for just about any hard  kitchen and bath surface.  Just in case you stumbled on this aticle you may want to get an idea of the most common conventional bathtub refinishing methods by reading these articles.  There are aslo some good articles here at a popular bathtub refinishing information service site,  We provide these links because the more you know the better the industry is able to provide good service. Better Yet read what the New York Times has to say about bathtub refinishing. I am pleased to convey that one of our PBRA members is mentioned in this article.  New Life for a bathtub by the New York Times and the PAINTED OTTER a PBRA MEMBER.  Give me shelter also has a nice video and of course the PBRA has several great videos on you tube. You may even want to brush up on your bathtub history.  Being informed is important when choosing a good refinisher as this is a reall good viable option versus replacement provided it’s done right and with good products.  The national kitchen and bath remodeling association recommends it because of the overwhelming cost savings.  Before we proceed conveying the facts of uv coatings  let us begin with  dispelling some of the most common myths about UV Coating technology.

It’s best to know about the most common process so that you may know how to compare it to the PBRA process of UV light curing or other suppliers of this product . For those that know about refinishing please continue on.

The UV cured, curing, process of high performance coatings has actually been around for many years now and curiously enough your first encounter with UV Light technology may have been during a local visit to your dentist or a fender bender where you may have required  a quick touch up on your vehicle. We began as Arm Chair UV specialist ourselves but quickly learned that in order to become any kind of  expert in the field or to even render any kind of reliable opinion we first had to educate ourselves in UV-OLOGY.  I call it Uv-ology because you must first become a student willing to keep an open mind and be receptive to change and be willing to learning new techniques.  So we have been studying the details of practical application and the science behind it we began applying what we learned in real world to applications.

If you are if your simply curious about UV science and want to know how it will effect our world click here.  Only recently has anyone adapted this process to the bathtub refinishing industry. There are some in this industry who are debating whether or not the process actually works. I don’t see any issue to debate. We have been spraying and testing UV coatings for a few months now and have just finalized our process. Will it work in all situations? NO it will not. I can tell you with complete certainty that the dynamics of the process  would not make it practical.

What it has done is make our industry stop and re-evaluate how we can improve the business with regards to making it a green alternative to our current methods without the loss of performance. Having us develop a UV cured bathtub refinishing system or coating also lead us into finding greener methods of bathtub refinishing for areas where a UV light would not be practical. Well keeping true to our form we have put together a bathtub refinishing system that meets the approval of the USGBC.ORG.

Who and what is LEED?

LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system,  providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.

Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED provides building owners and operators a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.

LEED is flexible enough to apply to all building types – commercial as well as residential. It works throughout the building lifecycle – design and construction, operations and maintenance, tenant fitout, and significant retrofit. And LEED for Neighborhood Development extends the benefits of LEED beyond the building footprint into the neighborhood it serves.

Since the PBRA is always looking for the Holy Grail of coating with regards to performance and green durability our research has allowed us to put together a green coating system where a UV LIGHT will not work. It is LEED CERTIFIED. I’m sure others will follow our lead or at least try and copy it. We hope they do. Here is a video of our conventional green bathtub refinishing system at work.

All the informed companies and individuals with first hand experience are not asking whether or not it UV coatings work but how can we make it a more practical solution  for our industry?  Only the misinformed still doubt uv cured paint or coating technology. The Europeans have been using uv technology for many year.

If our own experience is not enough to convince you then how about multi billion dollar companies who span the globe that are currently using UV technology? Remember when reading this that the bathtub refinishing industry is only a tiny micron spec of an industry compared to the automotive refinish industry. The bathtub refinishing industry is so tiny that chemical companies will hardly give you the time of day unless you show some serious potential in your particular vertical field. So if the UV cured Automotive refinish shops are currently using this technology   I can tell you without a doubt uv cured coating is here and coming to more industries and  from my own first hand experience in both the automotive and the bathtub refinishing industry most people are a little more picky about the paint falling off their $100,000 Mercedez Benz or BMW than a $350 bathtub refinishing job. Watch this actual UV Automotive refinishing Video this should convince you. or read this brief taken from Radtech.org one of our resourses to helping  the uv bathtub refinishing industry.

CLICK HERE TO SEE A ONE OF THE NICEST UV LIGHTS ON THE MARKET WE HAD THIS PICTURE UP MONTHS AGO BUT FOUND THIS VIDEO OF THE SAME LIGHT. I DOUBT IT WILL  MAKE IT INTO BATHTUB REFINISHING IN THE NEAR FUTURE BUT IT CONFIRMS WHAT WE WROTE LONG AGO. UV DOES WORK AND IS HERE TO STAY.

How it works:

UV CURE PROCESS explained by Radtech.com

The UV Cure Process Explained

The UV Cure Process Explained

After UV paint is applied to the vehicle, the film will remain wet until it is exposed to UV energy. The polymer chains that make up the coating remain short and unconnected until UV light is directed onto the paint film. When UV light is focused onto the paint surface, chemicals known as photoinitiators are activated, which start the cross-linking process in the paint film. In just a few minutes the polymer chains are linked together to form a very large network. This causes the paint to solidify and cure.

This process is somewhat similar to the process associated with exposing photographic film, or more graphically, the exposure and development of Polaroid® film, which was popular several years ago. Nothing happens to film until the film is exposed to light. When that happens, chemical reactions occur that change the film. In the case of Polaroid® film, the whole set of reactions, including exposure and developing, happened in a minute or two before your eyes, just like the UV curing action of UV paints. The end result is you will have a bathtub refinishing coating in this case that will be zero vocs totally green non toxic but without sacrificing performance. (Photos Courtesy of Radtech.org)

Most of the UV refinishing lights I have seen are large and cumbersum for a mobile service business and not exactly what I first invisioned a year ago. My first thought was great, we can spray a coating and waive a light over it and we are done. ” NOT” ! I wish it were that way but anyone who has actually refinished a bathtub using this sytem in its present state will tell you it’s not that simple.  However as we adapt to the technology I am certain the lights will become smaller and more portable and our techniques will improve. In fact  we currently have a light that reminds us more of a blow dryer that functions and performs without a large transformer. Here is a video of the PBRA light in action. It’s small, portable, and while not as fast as the larger lights the small size maybe a trade off in time but it does get the job done. I have talked to some of the other light reps and they certainly do  have some nice equipment. Some of the transformers can weigh as much as 75 Lbs. I am sure all the features are worth it but carrying it up stairs and in tight areas may pose a problem for refinishers. Like everything else these companies are working as quickly as possible to scale them down without the loss of features. It is really up to the individual refinisher if they want to carry and transport another piece of equipment.

Being a pro-active organization we at the PBRA chose to do our own testing  by hiring our own chemical company and purchasing all the equipment to began our research from the ground up so that we may formulate a vertical system to help supply our own members. We believe its a viable solution to many applications.  It may not be the first on the market but I am sure it will end up the best.

The PBRA made this investment because we would rather form our own opinions based on science, practical testing and first hand knowledge. Its what the PBRA is all about. Most of us enjoy the process and learning together.

So After making these investments in working with whom we believe to  be the leader in uv chemical technology we spent hundreds if not thousands of hours on research before even turning on our uv light. It is only now we feel qualified to render a good opinion regarding the process and feel comfortable adapting this process to the PBRA refinishing standards.

There is absolutey no doubt or really nothing to debate as any informed person working within this industry knows the process works. It was a compliment to the PBRA that we could even get our foot in the door with our currently chemical company.  They had enough faith in us and our abilities and business concepts that they took us on a client.  We are busy perfecting the performance and ease of use for our vertical market.  We chose to perfect this technology as it stands to reason that if the automotive refinish industry is already using the technology you can bet it was only a matter of time before it spilled over into the bathtub refinishing industry.

Midwest Chemicals a company based in Orlando Florida should be credited for introducing one technique to the bathtub  refinishing industry. They are a large supplier and were certainly the first to adapt a process to the bathtub refinishing industry. I dont know of of any actual factories distilling UV coatings for our industry . Most of us go to the source and began formulating a product or system while doing the beta testing. The information is then fed back and adjusted to our industry needs. I think this is where the PBRA excels. We have so many successful independent companies banded together so that a coating can be tested for almost any situation and adjusted to meet over all needs of the refinisher.  Our formulas  built so a system or recipe is proprietary to PBRA refinishers. This makes us unique. Our development has been steady and on a smaller scale. The analogy I like to use is a public school versus a private school. We are a smaller class room with limited students matched with more then enough teachers which allows us to deliver what we believe to be a better refinishing education. We dont have 4200 refinishers to try and and service nor are we trying to mass produce refinishers to use our products.

The PBRA is currently about to to release  our uv cured coatings system.  We did not concentrate on being the first but focused our emphasis on being the best. Here is a short clip of a few tiles refinished with our system. Keep in mind NO OTHER COATING SYSTEM has withstood even this simple test. Click here to view the Ultimate UV Bathtub Refinishing system

We can all agree  Going green is always politically correct in public but the process still needs to be practical in practice.  For  the consumer we know that if you can buy a solvent based system in your area  from a reputable supplier it’s perfectly fine to use without any problems as long as proper precautions are taken by your professional refinisher to isolate the area. In fact you still need to isolate the area with 100 percent zero voc uv coatings. I see some firms marketing the UV products with such a green spin they make it sound like you can pick it up and drink it. Not so. There is an odor, Your eyes get a slight burning and you surely still need a mask and safety equipment. There is less of an odor for sure but I could not comfortably tell anyone not to isolate an area or not to wear protective gear.

The PBRA goes to  great lengths to make sure all our systems meet the standards set by the the U.S. Green Building Council . UV or Solvent our coatings and procedures meet the requirements.

You have to consider the fact your average refinisher has much more to be concerned about health wise as their exposure is on every job every day. Putting gas in your vehicle is more dangerous than refinishing a bathtub with a conventional system.

If your bathtub refinisher is comfortable applying a solvent based system and can do so with little inconvenience to a confined area then it’s our opinion the public has little to fear and not to fall prey to the current scrare tactics being used a great product.

Frankly,I despise scare tactics to sell any service.  The original Professional Bathtub Refinishers Association formed in 2000 with 70 experienced members across America and Canada all agree it’s a shameful act to try and use these tactics to sell any product or service ( Note we have uv coatings too) but we will market them only on their merit, need and performance. Just like a mechanic who has many tools in his box we are simply adding  this process as another refinishing tool so that we can use the best process to meet our customers needs not matter the situation.  This is turn keeps you safe and the price affordable.  The PBRA offers you the best of both worlds. We don’t give up quality nor do we scare you into a particular process or situation geard to scaring you into paying more then a fair price for the profesional services rendered. We use the right tool for the right job.

It’s our way of demonstrating to the world that we are serious about being the best in our craft.  We feel many companies are trying to ride the green gravy train by trying to scare people into thinking the average process causes cancer or birth defects in children. Who will argue a case against birth defects, cancer and children?  While conventional refinishing requires caution so does uv cured bathtub refinishing.  If you don’t think a UV light cant be dangerous then read this. I find it ironic that a bathtub refinishing  suppiler will ride the cancer causing baby defects light wave  while buying their lights from one of the most popular light suppliers to the bathtub refinishing industry that has an article published on their web site linking to the American Cancer Society warning about the dangers of their UV LIGHTS. But just in case be sure to read this uv cured safety guide.

No reputable bathtub refinisher would expose himself or anyone in a way that would be harmful to his customers or himself.  I have witnessed scare tactics many times over in this industry especially  in 1995 where the industry fed off of one news cast regarding be LEAD in Worn bathtubs.

After that came the ISO FREE debate along with questin should bathtub be  acid etched or not?  The consumer and the industry suffered.  It was all about putting a spin on the process to scare the general public and refinishers into doing business with the spin doctors of refinishing.

In reality, all you need is a clean dry dull surface profile in order to give the surface ” tooth”  for the coating and primers to bite into. This also allows for a proper surface profile  for the vast choices of  silane adhesion  promoters to perform at their optimum . There are literally thousands of silane ahesion promoters to choose from and it requires years of testing to match a silane bathtub bonding agent to your particular product.

The PBRA simply views UV cured bathtub refinishing along with our other green hybrid technologies and conventional refinishing methods as  tools or options in our vast arsenal of refinishing products. Having access to multiple systems allows us to  cater to your exact needs. If I were working in a hospital I would probably option for our uv cure sytem as the odors are a bit lower and the cure process is faster.  But of course the cost is going to be more expensive. If I am working in vacant unoccupied unit such as apartments then a standard conventional refinishing sytem is all that is needed and the cost can be lower. If I am working in a hotel we can option for a UV cured or a fast solvent cure to prevent lost revenue.  Residential refinishing is easily performed safely using conventional standards so that we can hold cost down. Safety is actually built into most refinishing systems simply for the refinishers sake.

After all a bathtub refinisher and his employees have as much to live for as the customer. Going green is always good plus using a a low VOC coating without loosing quality in the bathtub refinishing industry is on every reputable refinishing companies agenda.

Again the question asked by most is : Does uv bathtub refinishing work?  The answer based on our hands on research and testing experience is yes. But so do all the other methods.  There are still a few misinformed people writing or creating doubt.

Another issue I read about was determining whether an area is cured that may not get full light exposure. Well the PBRA has the answer to that question. Actually it was  pretty easy to over come that problem. It’s true  that if the light does not penetrate then the coating will not cure.  The scenario of not drying can happen even in a conventional refiishing systems if your mix ratio is incorrect then it may not cure properly.  This issue has already been addressed by the PBRA.  I can’t go into detail but again it was actually an easy issue to resolve.

When reading other blogs I see statements about spot repairs?  That stripping off  the coatings is the only way to do it. Only the uniformed would say such a thing. That’s the difference between actual experience and free advise. The truth is I have repaired many places on our uv samples just so that our members at the PBRA will have proper skills before we begin distribution.

The PBRA would not turn loose any uv coating system without first working out these procedures. Again I reference the fact that the bathtub refinishing pulls a lot of technology from the auto refinish industry. Billion dollar companies have already patented this techology. As I mentioned above people are lot more picky about coatings falling off their cars than a bathtub.  Autobody shops do not respray entire cars just to make one spot repair using  UV or a Conventional system. Visit this page and see one of the most unique uv spray guns I have ever encountered. A spray gun that shoots and cures at the same time.  We here  are simply adapting this process  and developing specs to meet our specific needs within the bathtub and tile refinishing industry. Here are the two automotive giants whose coating virtually cover most automobiles world wide. Azko Nobel  and PPG industries working along side of radtech.org

I hope this Article has shed some factual light on this issue and we look forward to your postings and comments on this blog.

In conclusion: All refinishing systems used by professionals are safe when applied  properly. The Greener the better but rest assured we at the PBRA have a refinishing system for every need. The UV cured Coating system is just one system. If you want to learn about them all then join us. ( Experience is Required) The bathtub Refinishing Site.   They are better then nothing and can hep you get clicks. It’s importan to know the PBRA is not a CLICK through site.
